Back to school

Here we are again, on the eve of yet another first-day-of-school. The difference this time, is that I’m really on my own. In years past, I’ve had my parents and everything else that comes with being in the comfort of your own home. After spending the past week getting moved into my new apartment, the signs of what post-college life have already started peeking around the corners. Worrying about bills, security deposits, cleaning your own place, cooking…all things that were a mere afterthought in my (formerly) carefree lifestyle. The prospect of turning 20 in a couple months doesn’t help me feel any younger; I know that the responsibilities and bills will only pile up even higher.

I’m looking forward to an awesome (and much improved from last year) school year and wish the same to you all.

Eyes on Beijing

The Olympics are finally here. Always one of my favorite events, this year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China was one of the most hyped ever. As someone who has always been wary of the Chinese, still found myself thoroughly impressed with the opening ceremony. The artistic performance was highly creative and melded clockwork precision with 15,000 performers; the Chinese have seriously set the bar high for future hosts as well as shown the world how far China has come in the last decade. Aside from one tragic story, the games are well run so far.

As of today, China leads not only the overall medal count, but the gold medal count as well (China 9, U.S. 3). While i don’t expect the discrepancy to last for long (espescially once track and field gets under way), I strongly believe that China will give the United States a strong run for it’s money in terms of overall medals.

So far we’ve seen some epic performances, most notably in swimming, fencing and basketball but there are stil nearly two weeks of competition. I typically find myself watching two TV channels at once and stream another event on my computer. You might call me some sort of Olympics addict. Derek posted some stunning photos over on Markfive, and Gizmodo has an interesting read about the opening ceremony here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have 3 screens worth of Olympics to watch!

Facebook Haters

So Facebook finally went live with it’s latest design and as expected, the backlash began right away. Search Facebook Groups for “new Facebook” and you’ll see results such as “I HATE THE NEW FACEBOOK (STALKER) Layout” or “The New Facebook Sucks!” or “I Hate the New Facebook”. Looking at most of these groups, it is clear that these people are misunderstanding what Facebook is meant to be.

Pro sports rejects find hope in USARPSL

While surfing the interweb the other day, I stumbled across a little something that epitomizes our country’s incredible capacity to create new markets for the public to indulge their inner consumer whore. Uncrate featured a trip to Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort for the USA Rock Paper Scissors Championship:

Looking for an excuse to get away this weekend? Then book your tickets for Vegas and head over to the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino for the 2008 USA Rock Paper Scissors League Championship. Sponsored by Bud Light, the event will run all weekend, with the champ being crowned on Sunday, June 22. The champ will receive a $50,000 prize and a ticket to compete in Beijing, China during the Summer Olympics. Not in the Olympics, mind you, but instead in the inaugural International Rock Paper Scissors Federation Championship, where they will compete against the champions from Canada, Guam, Hong Kong, Ireland and Malaysia to see who is the world’s best Rock Paper Scissors player. 1, 2, 3… go!

Is it even possible to be “good” at rock, paper, scissors? If it is, someone please enlighten me because as far as I’m concerned, I’m not convinced this is something that requires a league, $50,000 prizes, and trips to Beijing. It’s incredible that such endeavors are able to be profitable; but I suppose we’re in the one country that would do it. Knowing people buy into stuff like this makes my own consumer whorish tendencies pale in comparison.

No More Teachers, No More Books…

Unfortunately for me, dirty looks from teachers is my major. I made I made it though a tough year characterized by many many oopsidesnts I attribute to a severe case of fresmanitis. While track wasn’t the greatest either, it showed signs of promise. I tried telling myself that after first semester, but I’m still waiting for it to happen. Anyways to put things in perspective (for myself at least) The average student at Northwestern University as more tests in one day than I do all year at Cornell. Throw in the fact that NU has a whole extra month (or two) of school compared to well, just about everyone. That’s a lot of tests; you do the math.

A few things to note before I go:

  • Moving out is infinitely more painful than moving in
  • Especially when your parents don’t come to pick you up
  • Especially when you pack like a girl who overpacks
  • Especially when you’re only allowed one checked bag on an airplane and have to take the train with 5

That is all. Congrats to the DCDS track team on their Regionals win. Now back to being bored.
